Micro-precision machining, extremely small, ultra-precise

Micro-precision machining, extremely small, ultra-precise. The high level of expertise that Gühring possesses in the manufacture of tools and grinding quality enables us to also satisfy these requirements in micro-precision machining applications.

The miniaturization of components in a wide range of industries, including electrical engineering, medical technology and mechanical engineering, demand applications that for a long time seemed inconceivable. The smaller the components, the greater the demands on precision, repeatability and cost-effectiveness of the process. The demands are enormous, especially in micro-precision machining. Gühring can meet these demands with its new micro-precision machining product range.

When performing milling operations with small tool diameters, tool deflection is a major problem. The high requirements of micro-precision machining processes mean that it is necessary to prevent or at least greatly reduce the dimensional deviations that result from tool deflection. To achieve this, the micro-precision milling tools must be sharp and offer good cutting performance. Excellent carbide quality, narrow tolerances and reliable cooling are essential for the entire process, starting from the blank.

Drilling is another main micro-precision machining application. The Gühring micro-precision drill programme includes standard micro-precision drills as well as special tools made to customer order, both for HSS-E-PM and solid carbide micro-precision drills. Due to the trend of increasing miniaturisation, especially in telecommunications and IT, there is a growing need for such user-friendly drilling tools to be available in stock. Compared with competing processes such as laser drilling, micro-precision machining offers the benefits of easier integration in the production environment and economic efficiency.

Also in the areas of thread cutting and micro-precision reaming, miniaturisation of tools is not sufficient on its own to achieve a satisfactory result. Here, it is necessary to permit consistent volume production of electronic components as well as products for the precision mechanics and optical sectors. Process reliability and tool life are therefore key factors in reducing unnecessary tool changes and ensuring economical production in micro-precision applications.

These factors call for manufacturing technologies that are adapted to suit the product. The high level of expertise that Gühring possesses in the manufacture of tools and grinding quality enables us to also satisfy these requirements in micro-precision machining applications. Key parameters here include Gühring’s proprietary carbide as well as the cutting geometry and coating.
